Carandini renews the lighting of l'Hospitalet de l'Infant i Montroig del Camp station.

The application of this project is a train station with an intelligent lighting solution. The lighting solutions that Carandini has used are the V-MAX, Junior and HFL luminaires and the Controlux Engine lighting control system.

Customer requirements

As on many occasions, it all began with an idea, that of redrawing the train line that connects Tarragona and Valencia. This idea freed up the space occupied by the current tracks that cross the centre of many towns and villages and are right on the seafront, having a huge impact on the lives of people living in the surrounding towns and reducing the train's journey by up to half an hour. 

The idea became an engineering project in which Carandini had the opportunity to collaborate by designing the lighting of the station in l'Hospitalet de l'Infant i Montroig del Camp, which will only be used in emergencies. The project had to meet the light levels in each of the areas: platforms, canopies, car parks, roads and underpasses. Standardized light levels were established, but the uniformity had to far exceed these requirements for the comfort of the users of the space. 

Designing lighting installations would not be a complete task today without a lighting management solution that is at the level of the best available technologies. For this reason, it was decided to implement a lighting regulation system that would increase the light levels on the platforms before the trains arrived. In addition, for the whole installation; the lighting control of each zone was required to adjust the energy consumption to the opening hours, natural light entry and passengers flow. Finally, all this would work automatically and integrated in the installation's global control software, of SCADA type.

System and proposed architecture

To achieve autonomous operation of the luminaires, it was decided to use Carandini's Controlux Engine system. This system makes it possible to implement a wide range of customised solutions and to integrate them into the most common communication protocols in the field of industrial automation and intelligent cities.

For communication with the luminaires, the implementation of control cable and DALI protocol was proposed. As this is a specific and intensive infrastructure, communication with the luminaires could be guaranteed without exceeding the limitations of the distances and devices of the communication protocol.

In order to control each group of luminaires differently, the layout of different control BUS was defined. By using a protocol such as DALI for targeted control of the luminaires, the number of control buses could be optimised so that there were seven control groups with only five signal buses.

With the support of a team of specialized installers, the control buses were successfully implemented, making the implementation of the solution focus on the validation of the software, specifically designed to meet the requirements of the project.

After validating the operation of all the luminaires and control devices, integration tests were carried out, which showed that all the variables were mapped correctly and the system reacted to the control commands quickly.

Results: Adaptation to requirements in an integrated way

Carandini, with its portfolio of luminaires, was able to meet the requirements of a project with a high level of demand. In addition, with the Controlux Engine system it was possible to design a solution that met all the needs of each of the areas of the facility. This was possible thanks to the collaboration between the various companies involved in the project, the use of solutions with multiple modular functionalities and the standard industrial communication protocols. An open and flexible solution that allows automatic lighting control systems to be taken further and to interact with other devices. All this leaves the door open to designing installations that can be adapted to current needs, but also to those that have not been foreseen at the time of designing the installation.
